Dr. Smith-Heimer rejoined the John Stewart Company in 1997 as Director of Special Projects, returning to oversee project development and financial analysis for major real estate project development activities. Dr. Smith-Heimer brings with him an expertise in project finance and development. His prior positions in financial analysis in the real estate and banking sectors blend with his on-going academic associations, to bring a long history of real estate housing finance expertise to the Company.
As Program Development Director at the Low Income Housing Fund, Dr. Smith-Heimer was responsible for developing new capitalization vehicles to the Fund. In addition, he provided strategic planning support and financial analysis expertise to the Fund. During this period, he was (and continues to be) a visiting scholar and lecturer at the University of California, Berkeley, teaching courses in housing policy and real estate finance and development. Prior to this, Dr. Smith-Heimer was a consultant and financial analyst for a broad range of clients. In addition, he was at the John Stewart Company throughout the mid- to late-1980's, completing the structuring of a broad range of real estate projects and the partnerships used to finance these projects.
Dr. Smith-Heimer has a Bachelor of Urban Planning from the University of Cincinnati and a Master and Ph.D. in City and Regional Planning, as well as a Masters in Business Administration from the University of California, Berkeley. He was an Associate Professor at the California State University at San Luis Obispo, from 1990 to 1994, teaching housing, real estate finance and quantitative methods.
